Borobudur temple is the largest Buddhist temple in the world and a UNESCO heritage site that was built approximately 760–830 AD. Borobudur is built as a single large Stupa, from above it is in the shape of a giant tantric Buddhist mandala, it represents the Buddhist cosmology and the nature of mind.
There are 9 levels…the base level is a square and is about 387 feet on each side. There are 6 square levels with lots of beautiful carved reliefs telling the stories of Buddha and his life. Then there are the top 3 levels that are circular. The top platforms features seventy-two small stupas surrounding one large central stupa. Each stupa is bell-shaped with openings in diamond shapes or squares so you can see the Buddha statue that is inside. The large top stupa is empty….they are not sure if it originally had a large Buddha in it or not.
You are supposed to climb the steps on the east side and then walk each level clockwise 3 times and when you get to the upper levels you are supposed to have reached heaven or peace. Also if you can reach through the holes and touch the Buddha statue you are supposed to reach your dreams. So of course all of us tried and I am glad to say we all were able to reach the Buddha.
The view from the top of the temple was beautiful….you could see a Volcano on each side of the Temple…..it really was amazing. It was definitely worth the climb and heat as it is something that we will never forget.
