The bird market in Yogyakarta Indonesia has been in operation since 1809 in the same location next to the sultans’ water palace. In the bird market you can buy all kinds of animals not just birds. Parrots, owls, eagles, boa constrictors, cats, mongoose, dyed finches, multi colored chicks, lizards and even monkeys. The sellers of the birds and other animals go out into the jungles at night and basically catch anything they can and then bring it to the market and try to sell it. The laws seem to be pretty open in this area…. It was very strange and a bit upsetting at times but it was definitely an experience.
I have uploaded a video of them selling some chicks so you can check it out in videos.
Dyed Baby Chicks for sell at Yogyakarta Bird Market. The bird market in Yogyakarta Indonesia has been in operation since 1809 in the same location next to the sultans’ water palace. Dyed baby chicks are sold to children for $1000 Indonesian Rupiah…that’s about 5 cents US dollars. Notice how they put the baby chicks in a plastic bag for transport.
